Woman finds eggs made of plastic, Mayor orders probe

If pesticides in vegetables and injections in poultry were not enough to scare the people of the nation, especially the food lovers of Bengal, then some sinister brain has come up with a new idea of faking food by making eggs out of plastic. What more? These eggs have been reportedly distributed in the markets of Kolkata.

It came as a shock to Anita Kumar, a resident of Park Circus area when she found that the eggs which she had bought from a nearby shop were artificial and made of plastic. The incident has created a sensation across the city after she lodged a general diary with the Karaya police station alleging that plastic eggs are being sold in the market.

Sensing the gravity of the matter, city's Mayor Sovan Chatterjee has ordered a probe and asked the senior officials of the Health department of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to submit a report after conducting a detailed probe into the incident.

Chatterjee also called up the Deputy Commissioner, of the South-East Division, Gourav Sharma in this connection, urging him to look into the matter. Anita purchased some eggs from a shop at Park Circus on Wednesday evening. When she put the eggs on the frying pan, she was utterly surprised to see that the eggs were artificial and made of plastic.

She said that she bought the eggs for her daughter as a doctor had advised her to feed eggs to her daughter. She found that the colour of the yolk was little unusual as she put an egg on the frying pan. On top of that, she even felt a pungent smell emanating from the egg. The woman then took another egg thinking that the earlier one was rotten but she encountered a similar experience as the yolk of this egg too seemed to be like plastic.

On growing suspicion, she deliberately burnt an egg and she smelt something similar to that of burning plastic. Thewoman immediately rushed to the Karaya police station to lodge a complaint.

A police officer advised the woman to deposit the sample of the eggs to the state Food department for examination. Police assured the woman that steps would be taken if the eggs were found to be artificial.

After starting an investigation, police have already sealed the shop from which the eggs were purchased. The woman told the police that she along with her little boy had developed rashes on their bodies and had fallen ill on a previous occasion.

She apprehends that they had consumed plastic eggs during that time too. Police are conducting a probe to know where the shop owner had got these eggs from. Meanwhile, the shop owner has been interrogated.
