Woman arrested in Khardah for killing former husband

Kolkata: Khardah police station has arrested a woman for allegedly killing her former husband. She has been remanded to 5 days police custody on Friday by Barrackpore Court.

According to sources, police recovered the body of one Pratul Chakraborty (52) on Thursday morning from inside a room of a house at Shantinagar in Panihati. Sleuths came to know that Chakraborty had rented the first floor from the owner of the house Shyamal Majumdar.

He had told Majumdar that he was a high ranked official in a medicine manufacturing company situated at Baguiati. He originally hailed from Gurugram. He had also informed that his company will open another office in Sodepur soon and thus he needed to stay close to the new office.

After Chakraborty started living there, he made an arrangement with a local home delivery centre to deliver food to him regularly. On Wednesday night, the concerned delivery person delivered food to him.

He returned on Thursday morning to collect the utensils. But despite repeated knocks, no response was heard from Chakraborty. The delivery person immediately got in touch with Majumdar and both of them went to Chakraborty's room.

While trying to figure out how to enter the room, Majumdar discovered that the door was not locked. When they entered the room, they saw Chakraborty lying on the bed with a torn garment wrapped around his neck.

During investigation police recovered a ladies handkerchief and a bill of a hotel. Sleuths came to know that Pratul was divorced from his wife Aditi, who was supposed to visit him. However, no one had seen any woman entering the house on Wednesday.

Police immediately got in touch with Aditi and questioned her. She initially denied that she went there, but later confessed that she had murdered Chakraborty.

According to her statement, Chakraborty used to demand money from her. He even took money from Aditi for the rented house in Panihati. Aditi, an officer of Kolkata Airport, also alleged that Chakraborty used to torture her if she refused to lend him money as per his demand. Though Chakraborty used to tell her that he would repay the money, he never really did so.

On Wednesday, Chakraborty had told Aditi that he wanted to repay the money and thus asked her to come to Panihati. According to Aditi's statement, Chakraborty did not pay her any money when she arrived. On the contrary, she was assaulted by him.

After this Aditi retaliated and used a saree to strangulate her former husband. She then left the house late at night, but left her handkerchief and a hotel bill there by mistake.
