Weather to improve in city from today

Kolkata: After four days of sudden heavy downpour accompanied by lightning, thunderstorms and gusty winds, Kolkatans may finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief as the weather condition in the city is likely to improve from Thursday night, as predicted by the Alipore Meteorological department on Friday.

"The sky will be clear from tonight (Thursday) in the city and the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 25 degree Celsius and 16 degree Celsius respectively. Over the next 48 hours, there will be scattered clouds in the sky and there will be hardly any rainfall in the districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata. Whereas Sikkim and other districts of North Bengal will continue to witness light to moderate rainfall due to Western disturbances," said an official of the Alipore Meteorological department.

He further added: "The pre-monsoon weather will begin from Friday and so at times, the temperature may increase and there might be some amount of rainfall every now and then in the upcoming weeks."

West Bengal and Odisha have been lashed by heavy to very heavy rainfall for the last four days, with both the states receiving an extended wet spell, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Although the rains were initially concentrated only upon the north-coastal parts of Odisha and Gangetic Bengal, later the two states received rainfall everywhere.

Even on Thursday, various districts of South Bengal received light to moderate amounts of rainfall, with lightning and thunderstorms restricted to a few districts. Whereas the districts of North Bengal were lashed by heavy rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature in the city was recorded at 23.5 degree Celsius, eight degree lower than normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 18.6 degree Celsius, one degree lower than the normal temperature.

"Over the last 24 hours, the average rainfall recorded in the city has been around 55.2 mm," the official said. Due to heavy rains over the last four days, several pockets of the city including Dumdum, Behala, Amherst Street, Central Avenue, Thanthania and Khidirpur have witnessed some amount of waterlogging.

However, various pumping stations are fully operational in the city and the water is being drained out by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation within a few hours.
