WBSU to hand over graduation and PG degrees to colleges after results

Kolkata: West Bengal State University (WBSU) in Barasat will be only awarding PhD, M.Phil and similar degrees from the 2020 convocation. Till now, the university has been conferring MA, MSc and graduation degrees to students during their annual convocation. Students faced problems due to the delay in conferment of degrees by the varsity. Therefore authorities have decided to hand over the certificates to the affiliated colleges after the publication of the results.

"After the publication of graduation and post-graduation results students had to wait till convocation to get the degree certificates. The executive council has now decided to send the certificates to the respective affiliated colleges of the varsity soon after publication of results, to be provided to the students. Only M.Phil, PhD and similar higher degrees that are pursued after post-graduation will be conferred during the convocation," said WBSU vice-chancellor Basab Chaudhuri. The new system will be effective from the 2020 convocation of WBSU, which will be held at the university auditorium. This year, the third convocation of WBSU will be held at Rabindra Sadan on February 25 and all general degrees, including PhD, M.Phil, will be handed over to students.

Goverdhan Mehta, a researcher in chemical sciences and former vice-chancellor of the University of Hyderabad would be delivering the convocation address.

Some universities in the state have started providing graduation and post-graduation degrees immediately after publication of results. In a recent meeting, with seven vice chancellors of the state at Raj Bhavan Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi prodded the varsities for quick dispatch of degrees to students.

WBSU since its inception in 2008 had been embroiled in administrative red-tapism and had its first convocation in 2017. The inordinate delay in the publication of results was one of the major problems in the varsity. After Basab Chaudhuri took over as the vice-chancellor in September 2015 he streamlined the examination process and publication of results. At present, WBSU has 46 colleges affiliated to it.
