Unfair demands won't be fulfilled, says Partha

The agitating students of Gour Banga University continued their gherao of Vice-Chancellor Gopal Chandra Mishra over various demands. Around 245 students are taking part in the agitation programme to protest against marks distribution system in their examination copies.

They have demanded an increase of 15 marks in each of the copies which have already been checked. Till the time this report was filed, the students continued to gherao the V-C. The agitation started from 3 pm on Friday.

However, state Education minister Partha Chatterjee cleared that no such demands made by the protesting students would be fulfilled. But he advised the university authority should convince the students in a peaceful way. Chatterjee also informed that the district police have been informed about the incident.

According to police, the trouble began on January 25 after results of the second semester examinations were published.

The students alleged that poor markings was being given and they gheraoed the university's Controller of Examinations, Sanatan Das on January 28. The protesting students also alleged that Das was reluctant to review the examination copies. He even threatened those protesting students if they went to the V-C to complain against him.

The Inspector-in-Charge of English Bazar police station Purnendu Kundu said that they are closely monitoring the situation. The university authority did not call police to lodge any complaint.
