Two NRS nursing students released from jail

Kolkata: Moutusi Mondal and Soma Burman, the two nursing students of NRS Medical College and Hospital who were arrested for beating 16 puppies to death, have been released from jail custody after they submitted the bail bond at Sealdah court.

It was learnt that they have gone back home as the NRS authorities have restricted their entry into the nursing hotel at the hospital.

It may also be mentioned that some of the nursing students, who were staging a demonstration in solidarity with the two of their fellow students who had put forward certain demands including proper sterilisation of campus dogs, have gone back to their classes.

According to a senior official at the hospital, the two accused nursing students will not be allowed to attend classes or enter the hospital premises until the probe initiated against them is over.

An investigation has also been pending against three other nursing students who are believed to have been indirectly involved in the incident. It may also be mentioned that the three-member committee, constituted by the NRS Medical College and Hospital authorities to probe into the killing of the 16 puppies, had submitted a report to the hospital on Wednesday.

The report has been sent to the state Health department and senior officials are going through it.

If the accused are proven guilty, stringent steps may be taken against those found to be involved in the killing of the puppies, an official said.

The incident of beating 16 puppies to death had sparked massive outrage throughout the state and on various social media channels. Animal rights activists have demanded stern action against those involved in their killing.

Union minister Maneka Gandhi on Thursday had called up senior officials of NRS and asked them to immediately suspend the two nursing students, a hospital official said.
