Two teens met a tragic end when their speeding two-wheeler rammed into the railing of Kamalgazi Flyover in the outskirts of the city in South 24-Parganas late on Sunday night.
The victim, Payel Guha, the pillion rider, fell off from the 40-feet-high flyover when the two-wheeler hit the railing while the rider, Rahul Banerjee, died after receiving severe head injuries.
Police said four teens — Rahul Banerjee, Payel Guha, Sushmita Kundu and Aman Shau — went out for a trip around the city on Sunday night. All of them are residents of Regent Park area and on Sunday evening, they had a get together at Sushmita's house. After having their dinner they had set out for a trip. Payel, who was a Madhyamik examinee, was sitting pillion on the motorbike that Rahul was riding while Aman and Sushmita were on the other two-wheeler.
Neither any of them were wearing helmets nor did they have licences to ride two-wheelers. The motorbikes were also not owned by them. Just for some fun, Rahul and Aman took two-wheelers from their two friends and set out with Payel and Sushmita riding as pillions of the two bikes.
It was at around 11.30 pm when the accident took place. Sushmita told the police that Rahul suddenly accelerated his bike after getting onto the flyover. It seems he failed to control the speeding bike at a turn on the flyover and rammed into the railing.
The impact of the accident was such that Payel flew off the flyover when the bike collided with the railing. Rahul didn't fall down but received severe head injuries after hitting the iron bars of the railing.
Local people, who were present under the flyover, were shocked seeing Payel fall from the flyover. She fell on an app-based cab that was passing by. People approached her to find lying in a pool of blood on the bonnet of the car.
Both Payel and Rahul were taken to a local nursing home where they were declared brought dead.
It may be mentioned that bike races in the night on flyovers have claimed several lives in the past few years. Thus, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had directed restriction of plying two-wheelers on the Maa, Park Street and AJC Bose flyovers from 10 pm to 6 am when the state-wide "Safe Drive Save Life" campaign was launched.
Policemen remain deployed the entire night at both ends of all the three flyovers to restrict entry of two-wheelers. The police are now taking steps to check racing of bikes on other flyovers as well.
