Kolkata: Two persons were found dead on the ground floor of a four-storied building in Beliaghata on Sunday morning.

Local residents saw smoke coming out of their house and rushed in.

According to locals, Shyam Sundar Ghosh (82) and Golok Bihari Ghosh (78) were brothers and used to reside at a building on Raja R. L. Mitra Road in Beliaghata. Around 6:30 am on Sunday a cleaning staff of the building sensed a foul smell emanating from duo's flat.

He immediately informed other residents who knocked their doors repeatedly but no one replied. Police broke open the door and found the flat was filled with smoke. Police and other residents waited till the smoke cleared and found that Shyam and Golok were lying unconscious. No trace of fire was found then. The duo was immediately rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital where the doctors declared them brought dead.

Later some of the residents informed police that they had felt some burning smell at night. It is suspected that late on Saturday night a fire somehow broke out inside the flat.Though the source of the fire was not found, Shyam and Golok died while they are sleeping due to the poisonous carbon monoxide.

The exact cause of death could be determined only after the autopsy examination.
