Two arrested with skins of spotted deer from Odisha
Kolkata: Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has nabbed two persons here and seized four deer skins from their possession. The skins were brought from Odisha to Kolkata. The accused identified as Debdulal Nandi of East Midnapore and Arjun Maharana of Odisha were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) in Bankshall Court from where they have been granted bail.
Sleuths from WCCB recently got a tip-off that a few persons were trying to find customers to sell deer skins. Working on the information, sleuths started gathering information and came to know that the smugglers will come from Odisha and will hand over the skins to someone in Kolkata. Immediately, a team was formed police officers stepped up vigil at the Babughat bus terminus since early morning. After a few hours, a bus from Odisha arrived and sleuths noticed two persons with a bag were looking for someone.
Immediately, they were intercepted by the WCCB officials. They searched their bags and found skins of four spotted deer. Immediately, the duo was taken to the WCCB range office at Nizam Palace. During interrogation sleuths came to know that they were about to hand over the skins to a person for Rs 2 lakh per skin. But the accused could not inform whether the person is an agent or a direct buyer. Sleuths have found the details of the suspected dealer from the duo and trying to find him. They also came to know that the deer were killed somewhere in Odisha. Bullet marks were seen on the deer skins.
