Two arrested from Barrackpore over impersonation of MLA

Kolkata: Two persons were arrested, one of whom allegedly posed as an MLA and tried to put pressure on on-duty police personnel at Barrackpore in North 24-Parganas on Monday night.

According to police sources, a person riding a bike, identified as Dipankar Chakraborty, was stopped by traffic police personnel for allegedly violating traffic rules at Chiria More.

When on-duty police personnel asked for his bike's documents he allegedly made a phone call. While the argument was on, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), traffic of Barrackpore Police, received a call from an unknown person claiming himself to be the MLA of Goghat. He ordered the DCP to let go off Chakraborty. Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of traffic also received a call with the same version.

While the senior officers received the phone calls, a person claiming to be Samrat Pal arrived at Chiria More and asked the traffic police officer to let go off Chakraborty. Almost at the same time the officer was told about the phone calls. When he asked the duo about their identity and relation with the MLA of Goghat they allegedly started making contradictory statements.

After hearing them out, the traffic police officer decided to call on the number from where his two senior officers had received the call. When he dialed the number, the phone inside Pal's pocket started ringing. Thus, the truth got revealed. The duo was immediately detained and handed over to Barrackpore police station.

"Two persons have been arrested. They tried to give a slip to our officers by posing as an MLA. Both of them were arrested for cheating and impersonating. They might have done such acts before. We are probing the case," said K Kannan, DCP, Zone I of Barrackpore Police.
