Kolkata: A truck was set on fire following a road accident in which a 27-year-old youth was killed at Kandi in Murshidabad on Wednesday morning.
Police said the victim Tarun Ghosh was a resident of Bhandara village at Kandi and the accident took place when he was going to work on Wednesday morning.
People, who witnessed the incident, told the police that the sand-laden truck was running at top speed. The driver of the vehicle failed to control the vehicle when the youth suddenly came in front of him.
Local people rushed to the spot hearing the youth's cry for help. A section of people took him to the hospital where he was declared brought dead while some of the local youth caught the truck, foiling the driver's attempt to flee with the vehicle. The mob damaged the truck and set it on fire. The local people also staged a demonstration protesting against the accident. Later senior police officers intervened and brought the situation under control.
Monotosh Hazra, a local resident, said that most drivers speed up their vehicles while passing through the stretch as it remains bit deserted though it is close to a village.
Local people claimed that installation of road signs and other arrangements on that stretch would help to check accidents.
