Truck mows down ASI in Howrah

Kolkata: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Howrah police died after being hit by a speeding truck on National Highway 6 near Ulubera in Howrah on late Tuesday night.

The incident occurred when the police officer was on duty in the Kholishani area of Uluberia and a speeding truck mowed him down. It triggered tension among locals, who often complain to the police about overloaded vehicles that ply through the area.

Police said the deceased, Dipankar Saha was standing on the road when the vehicle crushed him under its wheels.

Saha, a resident of Barrackpore in North 24-Parganas was posted with Howrah

Gramin police.

Locals and other police personnel rescued the victim and rushed him to a hospital in Uluberia where the doctors pronounced him brought head.

The victim had suffered multiple injuries on various parts of his body. Senior police officers of the district immediately rushed to the hospital after the accident.

However, the driver and the helper of the truck fled the spot on foot leaving the vehicle at the accident site. Police later seized the vehicle and raids are being conducted to nab

the culprits.

It was learnt that the victim had joined Rajapur police station Uluberia as an ASI around five months ago.

According to the preliminary investigation, police said the truck was carrying sand and the vehicle was overloaded.

The investigating officers suspect that the victim might have tried to stop the vehicle when the speeding truck knocked him down on National

Highway 6.

Cops have started a detailed probe into the incident.

They are investigating if it was an accident or there was any foul play behind the incident. Police are also interrogating locals in this regard and looking all possible angles.
