Ohidul Islam, the block president of Trinamool Congress from Bhangar-II, suffered bullet injuries and is fighting for his life at the SSKM Hospital.
The incident took place near Cossipore area in South 24 Parganas on late Wednesday night when he was returning home after holding a meeting at a primary health centre. Police said that Ohidul was returning home on his motorcycle when some miscreants stopped him near Kathalia High School.
One of the accused suddenly took out a gun and shot at him. The victim received bullet injury to his shoulder. After hearing the gunshot, the local residents rushed to the spot to find the victim lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately rushed to the SSKM Hospital. The doctors in the hospital conducted a surgery on the patient and removed the bullet from his body. According to the doctors, the condition of Ohidul is serious.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had taken charge of the investigation. The CID officers reached the spot early on Thursday morning and started a probe. They have started raiding various places in the district.
The district Trinamool Congress leaders have, however, alleged that CPI(M)-backed goons might have been involved in the attack. Police came to know in the investigation that the victim could not recognise the miscreants as the area was dark.
Police also suspect that the miscreants might have come on a motorcycle. They are yet to ascertain how many miscreants had attacked the victim. Police are also investigating if there could have been any other motive behind the attack.
Some local Trinamool Congress leaders in the district also alleged that apart from the CPI(M)-backed goons, some maoists might have been involved in the attack. It might also be an attempt to weaken Ohidul who has become instrumental in strengthening the party's organisation in the area. Police have started a detailed probe into the incident but they are yet to arrest the accused. Some of the Trinamool Congress leaders from the district on Thursday visited the hospital to see the victim.
