Traffic cops to reach out to vehicle owners

Kolkata: The Traffic Sergeants of Kolkata Police have been asked to reach vehicle owners either on phone or physically, to make them aware about the waiver scheme regarding pending traffic fines. Sources informed that the step has been taken to ensure clearance of the maximum number of pending cases.

According to sources, the Traffic department of Kolkata Police has provided a list of the vehicles with pending cases to the 25 traffic guards. The concerned Officers in Charge (OC) of the traffic guards have been asked to designate his men to inform the vehicle owners about the pending fines and inform them about the waiver scheme. But the officers who have been asked to do so are facing several problems. Sources informed that in several cases, the addresses in their database are not matching. In some cases, the owners have changed their residence long time ago but did not change the registered address of the vehicle. Also, several people have sold their vehicles but did not change the ownership.

"Several people do not know what to do. We are just trying to help them settle the pending fines through the one time traffic fine settlement scheme," said a traffic police official. According to sources, after the scheme gets over, any more cases found pending will be acted upon. The owners will be liable for not paying the fines and may get summoned as per the provisions of law. Till Sunday several lakh pending cases worth crores of rupees were settled.
