Toddler gets new lease of life after removal of wire from neck

Kolkata: NRS Medical College has given a fresh lease of life to a four and half-year-old boy from Kalna in East Burdwan, by removing a 3 inch tyre bead wire that had entered his body through his neck.

The victim, Suvojit Roy Chowdhury, was playing with an old cycle tyre in his native place in East Burdwan on Monday, when a bead wire accidentally pierced his neck.

After being informed by his friends, the family members of the boy rushed to the spot and found that he was profusely bleeding from his neck.

The family members removed a portion of the tyre bead wire which was hanging outside his neck. However, they had no idea that a portion of the wire had entered his body.

The boy complained of serious pain in his neck on Monday night and also vomited multiple times. He was then rushed to a local hospital, where the doctors performed an X-Ray scan of his neck and found a portion of the wire stuck near his spinal cord. Following this, the hospital referred the patient to NRS Medical College and Hospital.

The boy was then taken to the emergency ward of the hospital. After a brief check-up, he was admitted to the ENT department. A team was constituted, comprising senior doctors.

Afterwards, a CT scan was performed on him, to determine the exact position of the wire. A surgery was conducted on the boy by the team of doctors, headed by Dr T K Hazra, who is the head of the ENT department of the hospital. The wire was successfully removed during the surgery that lasted nearly two hours.

It was difficult for the doctors to conduct the surgery, as they had to take various precautionary measures, failing which the nervous system of the patient could have been affected. The boy has been kept for 48 hours observation. It has been learnt that his health condition is fast improving.

Dr Hazra said: "The health condition of the patient is stable now. He has been kept under observation."
