Preliminary investigation revealed that Chandan was involved in various anti-social activities and it often used to cause
disturbance to local people. He was involved in illegal selling of alcohol and running gambling dens in the area.

No one used to raise their voice against him apprehending dire consequences. It was only Debdas who had protested against his activities quite a few times.

Hearing the sound of a bullet shot, local people went to the spot and found Debdas lying in a pool of blood. The accused and his associates fled from the spot by that time apprehending getting caught. Local people took the victim to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Tension ran high in the area as hundreds of local people put up a roadblock on the Krishnagar-Ranaghat state Highway which led to a massive traffic congestion in the area. The road block was withdrawn after senior police officers intervened and assured all necessary steps to arrest the accused as early as possible.

The mob also went on a rampage in the house of the accused. They set two cars and a motorbike on fire.
