TMC leader hacked to death by unknown assailants in Domkal
Kolkata: A Trinamool Congress leader from Murshidabad's Domkal was allegedly hacked to death by some unidentified miscreants, triggering tension among local residents.
The victim has been identified as Aftab Seikh (45). The incident took place at Kuchiamore village on Monday night, when the victim was returning home from the party office. Seikh was not only a senior official of Domkal Panchayat Samiti, but also an active leader of the ruling party in the district. Another Trinamool Congress member Sabir Seikh also received injuries when the miscreants attacked them.
It has been learnt that the duo was returning home on a motorcycle on Monday night, after attending an election meeting in a nearby area. When they were on their way home, a Maruti van coming from the opposite side hit the motorcycle at Mollapara More of Kuchiamore village. The miscreants got down from the vehicle and attacked Aftab and his companion with a sharp weapon. After receiving injuries, Sabir managed to flee from the spot.
The miscreants hurled bombs in the area to terrorise the people before leaving the spot. After being informed, some local residents rushed to the spot and found Aftab in a pool of blood. He was immediately rushed to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, where the doctors pronounced him brought dead. Police subsequently reached the spot and have started a probe in this regard. Following the incident, the district Trinamool Congress leaders accused Opposition parties like Congress and CPI-M of the alleged killing. However, both the parties have denied the allegations brought against them.
Alifa Khatun, the daughter of Aftab, said that around Rs 40 lakh had been given to contract killers to carry out the crime. She also demanded a high level probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) under the Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought a detailed report from the District Magistrate of Murshidabad on the murder of the TMC leader. The commission has been keeping an eye on the incident.
