Thundershower likely to bring some respite from sweltering heat today

Kolkata: The Regional Meteorological Centre has predicted thundershower in various parts of South Bengal districts in the next 24 hours, bringing some respite to the people from the scorching summer heat.

A heavy shower accompanied with thunderstorm is predicted in the five districts of North Bengal as well. The people in the city and other districts have been experiencing hot and humid weather condition for the past couple of days.

According to a senior MeT department official, a low pressure trough that has formed over Bengal and a continuous flow of vapour from Bay-of-Bengal will bring the rainfall and thunderstorm. It may bring down the mercury for a while.

The weather office also said that temperature during the day and the humidity level will continue to affect the people in the city and other South Bengal districts, throughout next week.

A senior MeT department official said that several parts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, will experience intermittent rain particularly in the evening and the intensity of the rainfall will be maintained till Tuesday.

The city will also witness gusty winds accompanying the rain. The weather office forecast may get some comfort from the scorching summer heat as the temperature may slide down by a few degrees following the rainfall.

The doctors in the city have issued some directives to stay fit as the temperature slides up and down due to rains. Those who go out in the sun must drink adequate amounts of water and liquid substances. They are also advised to carry umbrellas, to avoid the sunrays from falling directly on their heads. People can also use sunglasses to get relief from the sun's glare.

The doctors have also suggested city dwellers to wear cotton dresses, to get some relief from the heat during the day. People are also urged to avoid soft drinks from shops and roadside stalls, while travelling in the sun.

A large number of people are often seen drinking lemon water or soda, while some others are seen drinking soft drinks to comfort themselves in the sweltering heat. Many are also found standing in queues to have Lassi from stalls in the Dharmatala area, during daytime. The people are also advised to avoid spicy food from restaurants.
