Three-day Rosogolla Utsav inaugurated

Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim inaugurated the three-day Rosogolla Utsav at Gourimata Udyan on Friday afternoon.

Earlier, a stamp bearing a photograph of Nabin Chandra Das - the inventor of Rosogolla, was released by the post master general. Bengal had got the GI tag for the famous sweet dish in 2017.

There will be a cultural festival and discussion on the history of Rosogolla during the event. A book by Haripada Bhowmick on Rosogolla was also released on the occasion. This is the first time such a big event is being held to celebrate the invention of a sweet dish.

Few people know that Rabindranath Tagore was an admirer of the 'Sponge Rosogolla' of Nabin Chandra Das. While talking to one of his students, Dr Pasupati Bhatta-

charya, Tagore wanted to know whether he knew the shop of Das in Baghbazar. Though a resident of Baghbazar, Bhattacharya did not have any idea about the shop. However, he had found the shop later and bought a handi of Rosogolla for Tagore.

The three-day festival has been organised by minister of state (independent charge) for Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Dr Shashi Panja. Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh and MMiC Debashis Kumar were also present at the inaugural function.

There will be an eating competition at the event and the person eating the highest number of Rosogollas will be given a prize. A bust of Nabin Chandra Das was unveiled by the Mayor on Friday as well.
