Three arrested for murder of elderly woman in Gariahat
Kolkata: Kolkata Police arrested three people for murder Urmila Jund (65), who was found dead at her home in Gariahat, within 24 hours of the incident.
The police have arrested Jund's elder daughter-in-law Dimple Jhund, her lover Saurabh Puri, and granddaughter Kanika Jund.
According to sources, on Thursday, the police detained Dimple and Kanika. Kanika use to deliver food to her grandmother. According to preliminary report Urmila was sedated and beheaded. During interrogation, cops found several ambiguities in Dimple's statement. When she was grilled, she confessed to the crime. She said her daughter Kanika is also helped her to kill her mother-in-law.
After interrogating the duo, the police came to know that Dimple's husband died a few years ago. Since then Dimple used to pressurise her mother-in-law to give her flat and jewellery her. However, the elderly woman refused. The police also came to know that the elderly woman lived with the family of her younger son, who was not in the town from December 11.
Dimple's and Kanika lived in a flat located on Ritchi Road. Since Urmila's younger son went to Siliguri on December 11, Kanika delivered food to her at night.
Sources informed, during interrogation, Kanika and Dimple said on Thursday night, they had added sleeping pills to Urmila's food. Kanika went to her grandmother and gave her the food. Immediately after giving Urmila the food container, she left. Late on Wednesday night, Dimple, Kanika and Saurabh and went inside the elderly woman's house.
At first, they made sure that Urmila had lost consciousness. The trio first strangulated Urmila and Saurabh beheaded her while she was still breathing. After beheading Urmila, he cut open her abdomen and stabbed her several times.
After they were sure that Urmila has died, the trio framed the murder spot by ransacking the room. They took out objects from the almirah and scattered them in the room, so that the case looked like a murder for loot of valuables.
On Thursday, considering the nature of crime, investigators suspected that the woman was murdered due to personal grudge. Later, while questioning local residents and members of Jund family, suspicion grew on Dimple and Kanika. On Wednesday night, around 10 pm, when Kanika came to deliver food, she had met one of Urmila's neighbours.
