Three arrested for defrauding people

Kolkata: Three persons from the city were arrested by the Kolkata Police Detective Department for allegedly duping several people by pretending as officials of a noted e-commerce company.

Their modus operandi

was alluring people over phone and emails to accept a lucky draw scheme purportedly offered by the e-commerce platform and make them

send money to some bank accounts.

"We arrested one Gularaj Ahmed (23) and Vishal Sharma (25) on the basis of a source information on Friday night from in front of the GPO on N S Road for their direct involvement in the case.

Soon after interrogating them, we apprehended one Md. Sadik (20) from near a dhaba from the EM Bypass area in the wee hours on Sunday," a senior official of the detective department said.

Following the statements of the arrested trio, a search at AA-53, Prafulla Kanan, Baguiati was conducted, and some incriminating documents including the customer data base, CPU and the like were seized.

The anti-fraud section of Kolkata Police's detective department had initiated a case on the basis of a complaint lodged at Hare Street police station by one Andrew Domnie Anthony Paul who is the authorised signatory of an internet company.

He had complained that from December 2018 onwards, some persons falsely allured the public through

telephonic calls and e-mails

to deposit money in

various fictitious bank

accounts towards the lucky prize scheme purportedly offered

by his company with the

promise to provide them attractive gifts.
