This Lake Road puja theme is inspired by travails of labourers

Kolkata: The Samajsevi Sangha puja at Lake Road is etching out the life of the daily labourers through their pandal ambience and décor during the Durga Puja that has stepped into its 74th year.

"It is the daily labourers who are the architect behind every creation but common people are ignorant about their activities. Our aim is to provide the pandal hoppers a glimpse of the places where they live, the equipment they require for their work and various other aspects of their life through our pandal . It is an attempt to pay tribute to the daily labourers for the hard work they put in to make us happy," said Arijit Maitra, general secretary of Samajsevi club

Many of these labourers in the city come from other states and live in dingy lanes and bylanes in the city and face a lot of hardships. But everyday they come in the morning at their respective work places and work tirelessly through out the day to return to their residences in the evening.

The concept for the pandal's décor has been conceived by Pradip Das and instruments used by them like hammer, spade , sickle etc will deck up the pandal. The Durga idol and her entourage made by Pintu Sikdar will be of sabeki style but in sync with the theme of the pandal.

The pandal has been divided into two distinct phases. When a person enters he will get an idea of the various activities of the labourers and as he enters in the interiors he will get to know about their place of stay which is gloomy and often devoid of basic amenities. However, there will be a sense of positivity as people will get to know how they celebrate and take part in various festivals.

"Just outside the pandal there will be an installation wall which will have a collage of pictures of the people who are working in our pandal to give vent to the concept that we are churning out through our puja," Maitra added.

As part of its social activity, the Club is also involving the autistic children in their puja. " We have tied up with the Autism Society of West Bengal in Mukundapur and children associated with the Society along with their parents have been invited to be a part of our puja," he maintained.

There will be a separate entry gate for these children, several support equipment for them and a 'quiet room' where they can spent time on their own in a relaxed manner if they are suddenly gripped by some sort of restlessness.
