Kolkata: Tension gripped Peerless Hospital at Panchasayar in Eastern Metropolitan Bypass on Monday following the death of a septuagenarian patient. Alleging medical negligence on the part of the hospital, the family members of the deceased Nanigopal Chatterjee went berserk and ransacked the hospital. A few hospital officials were also allegedly beaten up.
"He was admitted here for more than two weeks. We took him home just two days back after the hospital declared him fit. He fell ill in the wee hours of Monday and died while on the way to the hospital. How can it be possible that somebody can die after being treated and declared two days back?" the victim's son Tapas Chattopadhyay asked adding, that the hospital had charged a whooping Rs 35 lakh for the treatment.
A large police force from the Panchsayar police station rushed to the spot and brought situations under control. Two of the victim's family members have been detained by the police.
Denying any medical negligence on their part, a senior hospital official said that the patient was brought dead in the hospital. "He had a history of many ailments related to old age. He was affected with severe pneumonia when he was treated here," the official said.
