Tension at NRS Hospital after accident victim dies

Tension ran high at the NRS Medical College and Hospital on late Wednesday night following the death of a patient whose family members allegedly roughed up some of the junior doctors who were on duty levelling charges of negligence against the doctors.
Following the incident, junior doctors allegedly refused to perform their duties in protest against the incident. Police reached to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police said that one Iftikar Ahmed (42), a resident of C N Roy Road of Topsia area, was riding on his scooter on Wednesday evening when he met with an accident. Police said that when he was riding the scooter on Sealdah bridge, a bus hit him. The local residents rushed the victim to NRS Medical College and Hospital where the patient died late on Wednesday night.
After being informed, the family members of the victim rushed to the hospital. Some of the family members alleged that the patient remained unattended after being taken to the emergency ward of the hospital.
The oxygen mask was also allegedly removed from the patient. As the news of his death reached the family members of the victim, they started staging a demonstration inside the hospital campus. They went on a rampage ransacking some portions of the hospital.
The family members of the victim and some of the local residents allegedly attacked the junior doctors of the hospital accusing them of medical negligence leading to the death of the patient. The junior doctors claimed that despite being heckled by the family members of the deceased, they continued their duty at the hospital.
The hospital authorities have, however, denied the allegation of negligence. The family members of the victim have, however, lodged a complaint with Entally police station in this regard. A police picket has been set up at the hospital as there was tension at the hospital campus.
