Teen kills self after tiff with father

A teenage girl committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at Baluchar in Malda Town late on Sunday. Her body was seen hanging on Monday morning. Police recovered the body and have sent it for postmortem.

Rumki Basak (16) was student of class IX in a local school. On Sunday evening, Rumki went to a local fair with some of her friends.

Her father scolded her after she returned home telling her to concentrate on studies rather spending time with friends.

Rumki, an introvert by nature, suddenly started to argue with her father.

He father, Niranjan Basak, a rickshaw puller, was shocked with the behaviour of his youngest daughter and slapped her.

Rumki began to cry but none of the family members attended her and she went to her room. Police suspect that the girl took the ultimate step late on Sunday night.

She went to another room and hung herself with a saari by the ceiling fan.

Rumki's mother saw the body on Monday morning. As she screamed seeing her daughter hanging from the ceiling fan, other family members ran and saw that the youngest family member hanging.

Police have taken the body for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has been initiated by the police.

The investigators were also looking into other angles of the case. They are suspecting if Rumki was influenced to committing suicide.

The investigators may start an abetment to suicide case if they get any clue of her being influenced to committing suicide by somebody in the family.

The poor rickshaw puller Niranjan Basak looked bereaved and repeatedly said that he only wanted to see Rumki as an educated and independent girl.

His two other girls were not much educated to get a job and were married now. The old rickshaw puller had gathered sufficient money to give decent education to Rumki.
