Techie arrested for harassing Boston woman through emails

Bidhannagar City Police arrested an employee of an information technology firm at New Town on charges of harassing a woman through obscene emails.

The accused was booked on Wednesday and taken to the Barasat District Court. The investigators arrested the accused on the basis of complaint lodged by the relatives of the victim. The accused was slapped with charges of cyber crime and unlawful activities.

Avinash Chaturvedi, a middle-aged IT professional allegedly sent several emails to an Indian woman in Boston. The woman replied sharply against his act but Chaturvedi continued sending such mails to her.

The investigators learnt that the victim initially neglected the matter thinking that the man would stop sending mails after some weeks. However, this backfired and the man started sending more such emails without bothering about the sharp reaction from the lady.

The victim contacted her relatives in Kolkata and informed the matter to them. Thenafter, the relatives lodged an FIR with the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime police station.

The cyber crime specialists of Bidhannagar City Police checked those emails to ascertain the knowledge about the sender. They caught Chaturvedi and took him to the police station for interrogation. Initially, the offender denied his act. He tried to convince the investigators that his email account was hacked.

Later, he confessed to his crime in front of the investigators. Police revealed that Chaturvedi knew the woman since his training period at Salt Lake Sector-V. He took her email address to keep connection with her while she was being transferred to Boston for a project after the completion of her training.

Meanwhile, antecedents of Chaturvedi are being checked by the investigators. The investigators suspected that he might be involved in some other cyber crimes as well. His family was also informed about the incident.
