Sweet shops celebrate Rasogolla Day to mark 2nd anniv of GI tag
Kolkata: Rasogolla Day was observed at various events to mark the second anniversary of Bengal winning the Geographical Indication (GI) tag for the sweet.
Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) invited residents of Snehodiya at Misti Hub on Thursday.
Free Rosogollas were distributed amongst these residents and other visitors at Misti Hub.
Hidco chairman Debashis Sen said: "We are celebrating the second anniversary of Bengal Rosogolla that bagged the GI tag, at the Misti Hub in association with all the sweetmeat shops present here.
Rosogolla is a part of Bengal's history and pride. We are happy to celebrate this occasion along with senior residents of Snehodiya and people who are visiting Misti Hub today", said Sen.
The 'Mishti Hub', which opened last year, is a one-of-a-kind in Bengal, where renowned sweetmeat makers, including traditional ones, have come under one roof.
Today, different varieties of rosogollas were sold for the occasion at the stalls.
Bengal had received the GI tag for Bengal's Rosogolla last year on 14th November. The GI tag is a sign that identifies a product originated from a particular place.
Haripada Bhowmick, a well-known writer on Kolkata's history paid rich tribute to Nabin Chandra Das, the inventor of sponge Rasogolla.
Rabindranath was a great lover of this variety of the sweet. The day was observed at KC Das.
Many sweet sellers in Kolkata distributed Rasogolla free of cost to mark the occasion. It may be mentioned that Mother Dairy is coming up with Rasogolla and Pantua soon. The items will be available in packets of two, five and 10 and priced at Rs 10 per piece.
Rasogollas in different colours are now available in different shops in the city.
