Suspected B'deshi woman arrested for crossing border

Kolkata: A woman, suspected as a Bangladeshi national, was arrested from Balurghat on Tuesday night. Four youths, who are from Nadia district, were also held in this connection.

According to sources, on Tuesday night, all five arrested persons were found inside a car during a checking by officers of Balurghat police station at Mangalpur.

On suspicion, police detained them and started questioning. During interrogation, police came to know that the woman identified as Mamata Bala, 19, is from Naoga district of Bangladesh. Immediately, all of them were taken to the Balurghat police station.

The woman told the police that she had met Satyen Rana of Nadia on social media. She said they were in a relationship and wanted to get married. She had arranged money to cross the Indo-Bangla border through Hili area. The money was paid to a pimp who made arrangement for her travel to India, she said. Though the woman claimed that she was from Bangladesh, police are not sure whether she is telling the truth. During interrogation, cops found that the woman had given similar statements to the police earlier as well. They are trying to get in touch with their counterparts in Bangladesh to find out if she is a resident of the neighboring country or not.

The four youths, who were also arrested, had come to receive Bala and take her to somewhere in Nadia. Cops are further investigating the matter.
