Suicide at Metro, services partially disrupted

A 25-year-old Chartered Accountant student committed suicide by jumping in front of a Kavi Subhas-bound Metro station at Mahatma Gandhi station on Sunday evening.
Police said the victim, Anuradha Pandey, was originally a resident of Bihar. She had been staying here at Vivekananda Road near Chalta Bangan in eastern part of the city. Police are yet to ascertain the exact reason behind her suicide but it is suspected that she was suffering from depression.
The incident took place at around 5.24 pm and it resulted in disruption of Metro services from Maidan to Dum Dum station for sometime till the body was removed and sent for post mortem.
Police came to know from people who witnessed the incident that they had seen the woman loitering aimlessly on the platform for quite some time. But no one had even thought that she could commit suicide. All of a sudden she jumped in front of the train when it was entering the platform.
The police have got her identity after searching a bag that she was carrying and contacted her family members. The girl used to stay at Chalta Bagan as a paying guest. Her family members from Bihar contacted the person in whose house she used to stay here and asked him to rush to the spot.
The person has identified the victim's body. But he failed to give any clue that forced the girl to take the extreme step.
He told the police that he had not witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the past few days. So he had never suspected that she could kill herself.
The incident led to the inconvenience of commuters on Sunday evening. Many of them were found standing on platforms at different Metro stations — especially Park Street to Dum Dum — waiting for the train to come. Some had preferred to take the bus to reach their destinations due to the disruption in the Metro service.
Despite it being a Sunday, most Metros remain packed since evening. So the incident at 5.24 pm led to the harassment of many.
