Students of Dinabandhu Andrews College clash with outsiders over admission
Kolkata: Dinabandhu Andrews College in Garia on Friday afternoon witnessed clashes between college students and some outsiders over admission.
According to sources, some outsiders barged into the college at around 12.30 pm and started clashing with the students when they were denied entry to college premises.
The Patuli police had to intervene to bring the situation under control. A senior official at the state Education department said minister Partha Chatterjee had expressed his astonishment over the incident and instructed that the Trinamool Congress unit of the college should be broken.
The minister also directed that the governing body in the college, which has two councillors, should also be reconstituted. "He has also asked the police administration to identify the offenders and take action against them as per law," the official added.
The admission counselling for Botany was going on in the college at the time of the incident. A number of students along with their guardians, who had gathered outside the college, were gripped by a sense of fear soon after the incident.
The son of Member Mayor-in-Council (Solid Waste Management ) Debabrata Majumder was allegedly beaten up by some outsiders.
"I have come to the spot immediately after receiving the news of my son getting beaten up. There is some internal problems within the college. The clash may be a result of that," Majumder said.
Arup Chakraborty, councillor of ward 110 said: "Some miscreants, who do not want a peaceful academic ambience in the college, are involved in the matter. Political interference in college affairs is not desirable."
Police have detained 10 persons in connection with the incident.
It may be mentioned that local councillor Bappaditya Dasgupta had put banners infront of the college a few days back displaying that admission will be on the basis of merit and no on should demand money for admission.
