Streets wear deserted look as schools, offices shut doors across City of Joy

Kolkata: The city witnessed very low traffic on Monday due to closure of schools and places where huge gatherings usually take place.

According to sources, on Monday the number of vehicles plying across the city has decreased significantly. The number has gone down by at least 30 percent. The number of passengers in both state-run and private buses was also very low.

"A good number of vehicles are not plying as several schools and private offices are closed. Several private vehicles also did not ply on Monday due to the pandemic situation," said a traffic Sergeant.

As a result of less vehicles plying in the city, no traffic congestion took place on Monday. Sources informed that after observing the vehicular movement on Monday, traffic police personnel have been asked to keep strict vigil on the road as people may drive violating the speed restrictions, which could lead to accidents.

This apart, traffic police personnel have also been asked to continue the naka checkings and block chain raids, as instructed by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Kolkata, Anuj Sharma.

They have been advised not to use breath analyser to detect drunken drivers. Instead, if anyone is suspected to be driving in drunken condition, he/she must be taken to a hospital for blood examination.

To prevent any kind of accident, traffic police on Monday placed guard rails in the middle of the roads to reduce vehicular speed.

"More such guard rails will be placed at night. Officers have been asked to keep a tab on the roads," said a senior Kolkata Police official.
