kolkata: With the number of patients being afflicted with COVID-19 going upto 48, the highest in the past few days, the doctors have urged people not to panic and follow the COVID-19 norms strictly as the recovery rate is also very high.

One person died of the disease on Friday and 38 persons have been discharged.

On May 2, 27 people had been afflicted with the disease followed by 24 people on May 3, 31 people on may 4 and 36 people on May 5.

The doctors said though the number of cases is going up the recovery rate is also very high.

They expressed concern as many people are not wearing masks and going to crowded areas like markets and shopping malls. They felt that COVID-19 norms should be enforced strictly and no one should be allowed in shopping malls and markets without masks.

They maintained that physical distancing is a must and people should wash their hands frequently.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged over and again not to panic and follow the COVID-19 norms strictly.

A communiqué issued by the state Health department stated that 8,652 samples had been tested on Friday. Till date 25,100, 524 samples have been tested. Positivity rate for the day is 0.55 per cent.

The total number of positive cases across the state is 422. There are 404 people in home isolation where no one is in the safe home. Eighteen people have been admitted to hospitals.

The communiqué further stated 1,18, 906 people had been administered Covid vaccines across the state. Cumulative vaccination first dose 72, 285,020 while the second dose is 61,633,607. Cumulative vaccination precaution dose is 25,80, 105.

The statement said the total number positive cases so far in Bengal is 20,18,489. Total people who got recovered is 19,96,864. Recovery rate in the state is 98.93 per cent. Total death so far is 21,203. Case of fatality rate for the state is 1.05 per cent.

The doctors urged people to follow the COVID-19 norms strictly to check spread of the disease. "Little bit of awareness and we will all be safe," remarked a senior state government doctor. He urged the local clubs and NGOs to launch campaign requesting people to wear masks when they go out of their homes. Covid situation is completely under control in most of the districts and blocks of Bengal but in some places the infection rate has slightly gone up which is a matter of concern for the state health department.

A recent study conducted by the health department reveals that in some pockets the infection is on the rise. These areas mostly fall under North 24-Parganas, West Midnapore, Birbhum's Labhpur block. Cases have gone up in Rajarhat-New Town areas as well. According to the state health department figure, in the past one week, more than 12 cases have been reported from Rajarhat-New Town.

As many as 11 fresh cases were detected from the Barrackpore municipality area in the past one week and over 15 cases have been registered at Labhpur in Birbhum. Many employees of Kharagpur municipality who stay in the IIT campus have been infected with Covid.
