SSKM doctors remove pin struck inside woman's throat

Kolkata: The SSKM Hospital has given a fresh lease of life to a 56-year-old woman by removing a pin that she had accidentally swallowed while having food.

The patient, identified as Puspa Barui, has been complaining of dysphagia since then. Dysphagia is a condition when the patients face difficulty while swallowing foods or liquids, arising from the throat or oesophagus. The problems can range from mild difficulty to complete and painful blockage.

The patient, a resident of Kalna in East Burdwan, was taken to the hospital with various complications. She was immediately admitted to the ENT department of the hospital. The doctors at the SSKM Hospital found that the pin was stuck inside her esophagus. They decided to remove the pin through bronchoscopy on the patient. As they failed to remove the pin from her throat, the doctors performed micro-surgery on the patient on Sunday.

When they again failed, the doctors performed a portable X-ray on the patient to locate the pin. After locating the pin, the doctors finally removed the pin from her oesophagus following a brief surgery.

The doctors at the hospital suspect that the patient had swallowed the pin while having rice at home a few days back. The patient has been recovering and responding to the treatment, they said. The doctors believe that she will be discharged from the hospital in the next couple of days as she has already shown signs of improvement following the surgery.

The family members of the woman thanked the hospital doctors for giving her a new life. The woman had been under tremendous mental stress after the pin got stuck inside her body.
