According to the police, the accident took place when the truck was racing with a bus along National Highway 2 at around 8.30 am.
It was learnt that a Burdwan-bound private bus with more than 40 passengers on board was competing with the truck. The bus was trying to overtake the truck when the truck driver lost control over the vehicle and hit the victim, Priyanshu Singh (11).
The victim was going to fetch milk when he met with the fatal accident. He was crushed under the wheels of the truck.
The accident happened at Birudiha More near Kanksa. It triggered tension among the locals. Some of them put up a road block protesting against rash driving in the area. The truck driver fled the spot immediately after the accident leaving the vehicle at the spot.
Eyewitnesses told police that both vehicles were running at high speed along the Highway.
The bus was overtaking the truck when its driver lost control over the vehicle and hit the boy. The victim died on the spot. Police rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the boy.
The locals alleged that accidents often take place in the area as trucks remain parked on the road side. As a result, people often face difficulties while passing through the area.
Senior police officers assured locals that no vehicles would be allowed to park on the road side.
The victim's body has been sent to Durgapur Sub-divisional Hospital for an autopsy.
