Special road safety week to be observed from April 3-8

A special road safety week will be observed across the state to check road accidents by creating awareness among more people. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with DGP Surajit Kar Purkayastha and Commissioner of Kolkata Police Rajeev Kumar on Saturday in this connection.

The special road safety week will be observed from April 3-8. It has been decided to organise the road safety week in each and every block of the state. Initiatives will be taken so that maximum number of people can be made aware of the road safety norms.

In Kolkata, the special road safety week will be observed in each and every area under the police station.

The Chief Minister had launched a state-wide awareness campaign 'Safe Drive, Save Live' to check road accidents that had claimed many lives. The initiative was taken after it was revealed that a number of fatal accidents in Bengal had gone up like in many other states of the country.

Now, the move to observe a special road safety week has been taken to make more people aware of the road safety norms. Most of the accidents took place on the national highways. Notably, renowned folk singer Kalikaprasad Bhattacharya was killed when his car fell into a ditch and seven members of a family from Howrah were killed when a tar-laden truck fell on their car on NH-2 a few days ago.

The Chief Minister has taken up the matter soon after returning from her North Bengal tour and decided to observe the special road safety week across the state.
It may be mentioned that road safety week was observed earlier once a year in Kolkata and areas under other police commissionerates.

Now, the special road safety week will be observed with several new components with an aim to spread the message of road safety among more and more people.
