Kolkata Metro Railways, the oldest underground rail network in the country will soon have public toilets inside some of its Metro stations.
People who commute in metro trains to go to their workplaces have welcomed the move. The Metro railways started the work of constructing the toilets after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in last year had asked the Railway Board to install toilet facilities for commuters. Following the incident, Railway minister Suresh Prabhu while attending a programme in the city in June last year assured that they would consider the matter.
Passengers especially senior citizens and children were seriously inconvenienced while travelling the stretch between Noapara and Kavi Subhas, a ride of more than an hour. Metro Railway has taken a lot of initiatives in the financial year 2016-17 in terms of Passenger Amenities. Toilets are being constructed in four Metro stations. Meanwhile, a lift has been constructed at Dum Dum Metro station for the benefits of commuters. Two new platforms have been inaugurated each at Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and Noapara Metro Station. Kavi Subhash and Maha Nayak Uttam Kumar stations have become green stations as the total station load has been catered by solar energy.
