Soon, fellowship for technology students at Sanskrit College & University
Kolkata: In a significant stride to deliver the message that Sanskrit has an intrinsic connection with science, the Sanskrit College and University (SCU) will soon introduce fellowship for those from technology background to attract them to study the language.
"The state Higher Education department has already given us the nod in this regard. We are working on the modalities in close coordination with the department," Vice-Chancellor of SCU Paula Banerjee said on Saturday on the sidelines of a programme to celebrate Sanskrit Week.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Higher Education department R S Shukla termed Sanskrit as the "closest to the computer" and stressed the need for integrating the language with modern tools and techniques of learning and research. "There are many writings in the Sanskrit language that is difficult for a common man to understand. We should be thinking in terms of learning and research tools and getting more and more people to work on them so that Sanskrit can be translated into a language for the commoners to understand and connect," Shukla said.
It may be mentioned that Sanskrit's links with science can be best illustrated from the fact that it was professor Madhusudan Gupta of Sanskrit College who was the first man in the country to dissect a human corpse at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital in 1836. Gupta, who had joined as a professor in the college in 1830, was the first to be roped in by the Medical College for working in the field of forensic science.
The V-C in the presence of MP Prasun Banerjee also declared the results of the first Post-Graduate batch of SCU from the venue. Out of 44 students who had appeared for the test, 41 students qualified. Seven of them secured first class marks. It may be mentioned that the transformation of Sanskrit College to The Sanskrit College and University was done by the Mamata Banerjee government through a legislative act of 2015 and it was only on June 2016 when it began its journey as a university. The Sanskrit Week is being celebrated from August 24 to 27 in the varsity.
