Soon, Calcutta Medical College and Hospital to get cancer centre

Kolkata: In a unique initiative, the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) is going a get an exclusive cancer centre.
The state Health department has allotted Rs 42 crore for the new project which will come up inside the CMCH campus. It was learnt that the proposed cancer centre which will be housed at a seven-storeyed building will come up at the hospital campus.
According to sources, the cancer centre will be equipped with all modern gadgets and the machineries required for the treatment of cancer patients. A senior official of the CMCH said that there will be a separate outdoor at the cancer centre and separate rooms where clinical tests would be performed. Separate operation theatres would be made at the proposed building. A separate room will be dedicated where cancer patients would be given rays. There will also be separate blood counters. All the health-related infrastructure would be available under one roof including doctors. It was known that the radiology department of the hospital will look after the proposed cancer centre.
It may be mentioned that there was an old unit for cancer patients at the CMCH but the unit had not been performing for a long time due to want of adequate infrastructure. The CMCH authorities had informed the matter to the state Health department urging its officials to put in place proper infrastructure so that patients suffering from cancer can avail proper health services. Assessing the situation, the state Health department has finally given a go ahead for the project and also arranged a fund of Rs 42 crore.
A special team from Swasthya Bhavan had paid a visit to the CMCH and identified the area where the proposed seven-storeyed building would come up. Works are going on for preparing the building plans too. The construction work will begin soon, sources said.
A senior official of the state Health department said the cancer centre will have best quality infrastructure and modern equipment. The patients will be able to get best quality treatment here at the cancer centre.
