Sidho Kanho Birsha University to train students for civil services

Kolkata: Sidho Kanho Birsha University in Purulia becomes the state's first educational institution which will coach students willing to sit for state civil services and other competitive examinations.
It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has over and again asked students to sit for state and union Civil Services examinations. With this in mind, she allowed students to be present at the administrative review meetings so that they can have a first hand experience of how state administration functions.
A notification in this regard was issued by the university on March 6. Students in the post graduate classes and doing research are eligible for coaching.
While the enrollment is Rs 200, the monthly tuition fee is Rs 100. The last date of application is March 14 and classes are likely to start from March, GC Mondol, head Training and Placement cell of the University said.
Paschimanchal Unnayan Affairs department will construct a building for the purpose. It will house a library, a conference room and classrooms. Mondol said books have been procured and the students will get all the facilities that are available in Kolkata.
The classes will be held everyday.
The decision to open the centre at the University was taken following tremendous success of the students in National Eligibility Test (NET) examination.
In Social Science, 55 students had cracked the NET in 2017, said Mondol. The University authorities thought that the students will do well in state civil services examinations if proper coaching is given.
It may be mentioned that the first coaching centre at Presidency College was closed after the college was upgraded to a University. Some officers of the state and Central administrative cadres are giving coaching to students preparing for state civil services examinations.
Suman Biswas a WBCS officer gives coaching to WBCS aspirants at Egra in East Midnapore. East Midnapore district administration give coaching to students preparing for WBCS exam by the WBCS probationers who come to the district.
There is a centre in Birbhum run by an NGO. Classes are held at Suri Mahavidyalaya and district magistrate of Birbhum P Mohan Gandhi takes regular classes. The initiative was taken by Saumitra Mohan when he was the district magistrate.
