Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University convocation: 11 conferred with PhD

Kolkata: The third convocation of the Sidho-Kanho-Birsha University in Purulia was held on the university premises on Thursday.

The university in the backward district of Purulia was set up following the initiative of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Earlier, students from Purulia had to travel to Kolkata to study in universities such as Calcutta University, Jadavpur University and Rabindra Bharati University.

A total of 11 candidates were awarded with doctorates. Thirty five gold medals were awarded to the PG rank holders and 17 gold medals were awarded to the under graduate rank holders. The Vice-Chancellor handed over the awards.

The setting up of the university has helped the students of Purulia enormously as they do not have to go to other districts to study.

The university has started a course to coach civil service aspirants. The degree of Honoris Cuasa D.Sc. was conferred on Bipan Tudu, professor of the department of instrumentation and electronics, Jadavpur University. He is the son of the soil of Purulia. The degree of Honoris Cuasa D. Lit. was conferred to Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, a renowned kheyal singer.

Prof. Ved Prakash, former Chairman of University Grants Commission, was the chief guest. The Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Dipak Ranjan Mondal was also present during the occasion.

There are 1478 students pursuing master's degree while 47530 students are studying in the under graduate level. There are 147 students who have joined the doctorate programme. About, seventy five students cleared NET and SET examinations in 2018-19.
