Kolkata: The state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday arrested Sub-Inspector Rajsekhar Pain of West Midnapore district in connection with the complaint of a businessman regarding misappropriation of Rs 45 lakh.
According to the complaint lodged by Eunus Ali, the accused was the officer in-charge of Kharagpur police station and is known to be close to former IPS officer Bharati Ghosh, who was the then Superintendent of West Midnapore.
The Ghatal Court has already issued an arrest warrant against Ghosh in connection with another complaint by a businessman.
"The arrest has been made observing all legal formalities. He will be produced before the concerned court on February 14," said Nishat Pervez, deputy inspector general (DIG), CID (operations).
It may be mentioned that the CID has been conducting searches for the last few days at the Barrackpore residence of Pyne and also at his residence at Radhamadhabpur village in Daspur.
"Our main aim is to gather witnesses for the cash-for-gold scheme floated during demonetisation at the indulgence of a section of police officers and trace the source of the yellow metal after the CID seized huge quantities of gold ornaments from several places in Midnapore and Kolkata," a senior CID official said. All gold merchants in Midnapore have been asked to furnish bills and vouchers of sales and booking entries made immediately after the note ban.
