Kolkata: A student of Shibpur IIEST was killed and three others from the same institution suffered critical injuries when the cab they were travelling in rammed into a divider on EM Bypass on Sunday morning.
The driver of the cab also sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH).
The students who were reportedly studying MSC Physics in the institution were going to Rajarhat to appear for an examination. On their way, the cab they were travelling in met with a fatal road accident at around 7 am, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Sayantan Biswas who along with three of his classmates were rushed to CNMCH.
It was alleged that Biswas who suffered critical injuries in his head was denied admission due to unavailability of doctors at the emergency department.
Biswas was declared brought dead after being taken to a private hospital in the city. Three other injured students have been undergoing treatment at a private hospital while the driver has been admitted to CNMCH.
It was learnt that the driver had fallen asleep. When he opened his eyes the car almost rammed into the divider.
He applied a sudden brake but failed to avert the accident as the vehicle was at a top speed.
Due to the intensity of the accident, the air bags of the car came out saving the lives of the driver and another student who was sitting in front beside the driver.
According to preliminary investigation, it seems the driver of the speeding cab from an app-based service provider lost control soon after it hit EM Bypass from Maa flyover.
Police also suspect that the driver fell asleep before the accident took place. Four students and the driver were immediately rushed to the hospital by the police and locals. The deceased was sitting on the rear seat of the vehicle when the cab crashed.
Biswas was originally from Nadia's Tehatta whose father works as a child specialist at a government hospital in Nadia. The family members of the victim expressed their disappointment over the way he was shifted from the state run medical college in the city.
According to the victim's father, who is also a doctor by profession, a doctor does not have rights to practice in a hospital if he/she fails to treat a critical patient
in emergency.
Shibpur IIEST Director Ajoy Kumar Roy also expressed his concern over the infrastructure of CNMCH, He said hospital emergency must have the infrastructure so that critical patients can be given primary treatment.
In a separate accident, a middle-aged man died after being hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road near Science City on Sunday afternoon.
Police said the victim whose identity is yet to be ascertained was declared brought dead by the hospital. A boy and a girl who were on the bike also received serious injuries in the accident. Another road accident that occurred in Kulti killed two persons.
