Several students injured in clash between rival groups at Maulana Azad College

Kolkata: Two groups of students got involved in a clash at Maulana Azad College on Thursday afternoon while an examination was going on. Later, police personnel from New Market police station intervened and brought the situation under control. Some of the students have been detained and several of them have been injured.

According to sources, on Thursday morning Member of Parliament (MP) Sudip Bandyopadhyay attended a program at Maulana Azad College. The issue occurred after he left.

Initially, people had thought that the clash had occurred between two groups of students. But within a while, it came to light that the clash took place between the former and present members of the students' union.

It has been alleged that there are former students who are still holding posts in the student's union. Students of the college had been demanding a students' union with only the present students as members. The former students had refused to resign from their positions, which had caused multiple problems over the last few months.

On Wednesday, the two groups of student got involved in a clash but it was controlled before escalating to a major incident. However, a fresh scuffle over organising the annual fest took place on Thursday, despite an examination going on inside the premises. Members of the two groups attacked each other with sticks and iron rods. Several students and others were injured in the incident.

Guardians of the examinees got panic stricken as their children were inside the college. It was also alleged that some outsiders who had no connection with the college had been involved in the clash as well.

Later, New Market police station was informed, following which police intervened and brought the situation under control by dispersing the students.

Following the incident, college authorities have imposed an identity card checking process before entering the college. No one other than students will be allowed to enter the college henceforth, without proper reasons. A temporary police posting has also been made outside the gate of the college.
