Serampore: Miscreants beat up doctors, staff

Kolkata: A gang of armed miscreants beat up doctors and other staff of a nursing home and threatened them of dire consequences when they tried to resist vandalism at a private nursing home on GT Road in Maniktala area in Serampore in Hooghly district on Saturday evening.
The trouble started after nearly a dozen miscreants barged into the nursing home at around 6 pm and asked the doctors to start treatment of their wounded colleague. Initially, two of them came with the injured person in an auto-rickshaw and soon the others followed in motorcycles. "When they were asked to sign some official papers, they refused and brandished pistols. They told us to start treatment of the victim immediately. They also went inside the ICU where critical patients were being treated and in the filthiest of language threatened to shoot them if treatment was not started," a hospital staff said.
The person who was brought to the hospital had injuries on his face and leg and was complaining of pain in his stomach. However, even after treatment was offered they allegedly beat up Somnath Bhar and Biswanath Chakraborty, the two staffs in the hospital. "They were inebriated and as they were armed we did not dare challenge them," Chakraborty said. They fled with the patient after first aid was done. Sankar Prasad Dey, a doctor of the nursing home said: "We are still in shock."
The nursing home authorities have lodged a complaint with the Serampore police station.
