Senior cops visit NH-2 to inspect measures to curb accidents

Steps like setting up of watch towers at accident prone areas on National Highway-2 has been taken up by the state government to check road accidents that had been claiming several lives.

Senior police officers went to the accidents prone areas on Sunday and undertook an inspection.

The state government had decided to set up watch towers along the highways to keep a close watch on the movement of vehicles. At the same time CCTV cameras will also be installed to monitor vehicular movement.

It may be mentioned that there had been repeated accidents in the past few months. Thus, the state government has taken up the project in order to curb accidents.

The senior police officers on Sunday spoke to the local policemen and administrative officials to know what exactly led to the accidents in those areas. It may be recalled that Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was severely injured in an accident that took place on the highway when he was returning after a meeting.

Again, folk singer Kalika Prasad Bhattacharjee was also killed when the car in which he was travelling fell into a roadside ditch after hitting a railing on the highway.

A few days ago, the inspector of RPF Rajen Kumar was killed in a road accident near the Rathtala crossing in Burdwan.

It has been learnt that in order to check accidents on highways, a system to monitor the speed of vehicles at accident prone areas will be introduced and more display boards to make people aware about hazards of rash and reckless driving will be
made. Thus, vehicles will have to ply at a particular speed at specific locations.

At the same time, the police will ensure that immediate steps are taken if anyone is caught flouting traffic norms.

The senior police officers have also reviewed that how smooth flow of traffic can be ensured without leaving any space for accidents.
