Schoolgirl dies after family resorts to exorcism

Kolkata: In a tragic incident, a school girl died after her family members took her to an exorcist instead of a physician.

The incident occurred at Kultali in South 24-Parganas, which is around 70 kms away from the city. The victim, Mumtaz Mondal, a class VII student of a local school felt abdominal pain while she is in school on Monday morning.

The school teachers sent her back home. The family members of the victim took her to a local exorcist instead of taking her to a doctor. It was learnt that some of the locals had told the family members to take the girl to an exorcist.

Mumtaz had chest and abdomen pain when she was finally taken to the house of the person. The exorcist examined her for sometime and then applied his skills. The condition of the patient started deteriorating. He gave some amulets to the family members of the victim assuring them that she will be cured.

The victim was brought back home in the afternoon. Her condition deteriorated in the evening when the family members took her to the exorcist again.

This time he did not take any risk and asked the family members to take her to the hospital. The puzzled family members finally rushed the victim to Canning Sub-divisional hospital where the doctors pronounced her brought dead. Police later sent the body for an autopsy. They are investigating into the matter. The incident created a flutter in

the village.
