Satish Kumar, the IRSE officer of 1979 batch, retired as managing director of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL). He had led the construction of the country's first underwater tunnels through which Metros will be passing to connect Howrah with Kolkata.
He was the man behind completion of the twin Metro tunnels under River Hooghly in just 66 days for the East West Metro project. On his retirement, he said it is like "reaching a destination station after a long train journey covering the expanse of this vast country". Kumar has a career of four long decades in the Indian Railways and he was the managing director of KMRCL for the past 17 months. He has played a vital role in finding out solutions to all the hurdles which came up on the path of implementing the East-West Metro Project along with the twin tunnels. Moreover, he played a major role in getting clearances from Archeological Survey of India and Ministry of Defence for its construction. During his visit to Kolkata on June 23, Kumar said: "The service in phase I between Salt Lake Sector V up to Phool Bagan will commence in 2018. The rakes will be brought in December 2017."
