Sapling plantation to mark 78th death anniv of Tagore

Kolkata: Rabindra Tirtha will plant saplings on Thursday to observe the 78th death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

Scholars and important personalities will plant trees on the Rabindra Tirtha campus in New Town to mark the occasion. Noted scholar Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri, who is the chief guest of the programme will take part in the sapling plantation ceremony.

Tagore had introduced sapling plantation ceremony in Santiniketan to conserve nature. Seven decades after Tagore's death, people throughout the country have taken initiative to conserve nature. Thursday also is the 7th anniversary of Rabindra Tirtha.

Noted singers Manoj and Murali Nair will present Tagore's " Dakghar". Well-known Rabindra Sangeet exponent Aditi Gupta will take part in Sesh nahi je, a production by Suryabarta. Sujay Prasad Chattopadhyay and Pranati Thakur will be on narration.

On August 10, the members of Swapno Bhor will present Tagore songs under the direction of Sutapa Majumdar. On August 17, a programme titled Amar Kontho Hote Gan Ke Nilo will be held. Singers Rajashree Bhattacharya, Aniruddha Singha and Suchitra Sarkar will present Tagore's songs. Pitam Sengupta and Suchitra Sarkar will be on narration. Tagore had a baritone voice and he had enthralled the audience in Bramho Samaj on several occasions. But, later because of problems on his vocal chord, the rich voice had gone.

There will be discussion on Tagore and Gandhi as this is the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of Nation.

Programmes will be held on every Saturday and Sunday till August 25. On August 15, there will be a programme titled Bondhu He Amar, Roeyocho Daraye on Tagore songs and recitation from his poems. Well-known Rabindra Sangeet exponents such as Basabi Bagchi, Rabir Ghosh, Jayenti Soren, Doyel Pramanick will participate among others.

Urmila Sen, Banhishikha Goswami and Manimala Chakraborty will recite Tagore's poems.
