Santragachhi stampede: SSKM gives fresh lease of life to 44-yr-old

Kolkata: Abhijit Roy (44), who had his rib fractured during a stampede that took place on the foot over-bridge at Santragachhi in October, has been given a new lease of life by SSKM Hospital where he was undergoing treatment for nearly a month.

The family members of Roy almost gave up hope of his improvement after his ribs broke into 30 pieces. It was the relentless efforts of the doctors at SSKM that made it possible. Roy was released from the hospital on Tuesday. The victim was initially rushed to Howrah State General Hospital after the incident. He was later shifted to SSKM Hospital. The patient was kept in the ITU of the hospital.

A senior official of SSKM Hospital said the condition of the patient has improved. The victim would take around 5-6 months to lead a normal life. The patient has been advised not to undertake heavy work and lift any substance.

The official also said the victim had blood clots around his chest.

His lung was affected during the accident. As a result the victim had tremendous respiratory distress after the incident took place. There were some infections in his lungs after it was badly damaged in the accident.

The patient was in trauma when he was brought to SSKM Hospital.

According to the hospital sources, the patient is yet to recover the shock he had gone through. While being released from the hospital, the patient was advised to visit the hospital for check up from time to time. There is nothing to worry as he has recovered well. The patient has also been asked to follow some restrictions.

The patient is walking normally and taking normal food. He is not physically fit completely, the official said. The family members of the victim expressed their gratitude towards the doctors of SSKM Hospital, who according to them have done a commendable job.

The victim was returning home when the incident occurred. Two persons were killed and many others were injured when the stampede took place on the foot over-bridge at Santragachhi railway station.
