S Bengal districts, Kolkata to witness rains during weekend

Kolkata: The Meteorological Centre at Alipore predicted heavy rainfall in all the South Bengal districts by the end of this week as a strong low-pressure trough is likely to be formed over the Bay of Bengal.

According to a senior weather official, there is a possibility of an active low-pressure trough over the Bay of Bengal after August 3 which would bring in heavy rainfall in various parts of South Bengal including Kolkata.

The city and other South Bengal districts received considerable amount of rainfall since last week providing the much-awaited respite from the sweltering heat. The considerable amount of rainfall might have pulled down the temperature by few notches but it has failed to compensate the huge rainfall deficit in the state so far. Since the advent of Monsoon this year, the city has not witnessed heavy showers. However, North Bengal districts received heavy rains in the past couple of days where South Bengal has missed it.

A weather official said the quantity of rainfall will be higher in August compared to the figure in June and July. Heavy rainfall is expected to lash South Bengal districts from Saturday after a strong low pressure is formed over the Bay of Bengal. The situation may continue till August 6. The city is also expected to receive heavy rainfall during the weekend. The low pressure will also bring in rainfall in various North Bengal districts as well, the weather office said.

It may be mentioned that the city on Tuesday also received scattered rainfall in various parts. Districts including North 24-Parganas, South 24-Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia and Bankura also received considerable rainfall.
